Overview

Noodle Canteen, located on Murray Street in the heart of Colac, Victoria, offers a refreshing take on Chinese cuisine that stands out in a town with limited Asian dining options. This family-run restaurant delivers a warm, inviting atmosphere that complements its menu brimming with classic noodle and rice dishes. Whether you're after the hearty Combination Noodles, the fragrant Curry Laksa, or the wok-cooked Char Keow Teow, each dish is freshly prepared with evident care and a good dose of 'wok hei'—the sought-after smoky char flavor that elevates Chinese stir-fries.

The space itself is modest but welcoming, a cozy spot where the friendly owners create a sense of community. Diners often mention the accommodating service that adapts to various dietary needs, making it a reliable choice for quick lunches or casual dinners after a long day exploring the Great Ocean Road. The vibrant menu also includes options like the Seafood Nasi Goreng and the flavorful Rice Box, which is packed generously with meat and vegetables—a favorite among regulars seeking filling and wholesome meals.

While some dishes carry unique local interpretations rather than strict regional authenticity, this does not detract from the overall experience. The kitchen’s focus on fresh ingredients and bold flavors satisfies both locals and travelers alike, especially those craving the comfort of Asian fare away from home. The practicality of the location combined with extended hours means it’s a convenient stop for anyone in town looking for a satisfying bowl of noodles or a rice dish with depth and character.

In summary, Noodle Canteen offers more than just food; it provides a dependable and friendly dining experience rooted in authentic techniques and generous portions. It’s a cherished destination for those who appreciate casual dining with genuine flavors and a personal touch in a cozy, unpretentious setting.

One of the few asian food places in Colac. There's a wide menu of classic asian rice and noodle one-dish staples for around $15-$20 each. I ordered the singaporean beehoon which came in a huge bowl. I wouldn't say it tastes like the sinchew beehoon served in singapore but they are generous with the ingredients and it's quite decent! The china couple running the place are friendly as well.

As Filipino travelers craving rice, their 15AUD (- 550PHP) fried rice box and KFC bucket hit the spot! There’s a nearby KFC just across this Noodle Canteen. Fried rice has that smokey wok flavor, generous chunks of veggies, shrimp, and pork. It’s a little oily but that’s usual for Chinese foods. Grateful to the friendly staff for taking our last-minute order. One of the few places open past 9 PM—perfect after a long Great Ocean Road drive. Not sure if it was a temporary issue, but during our visit, the restaurant was only accepting cash payments.

One of the most reasonable price food I had so far in Australia for the past 12 days. The food was fried on spot. And have a lovely ‘wok hei’ taste. Which as a typical Singaporean, this is absolutely important. But to say it is Singapore/Msian food. Is not quite authentic. But given that it has ‘wok hei’ taste and piping hot, is perfect!!

Stopped here on our way back to Melbourne. Recommended by our tour guide. Average food. But served the purpose of grabbing a quick bite. Clear winner over the other international choices such as KFC and MacDonald’s.

Great service and great food! Definitely experts at anything with noodles. So glad they were open late after we had a long day exploring the Great Ocean Road. If you want to change the noodles, they’re ok with that. Workers were really kind. Wish they had this in Melbourne.
